I lived in this house till I was 4 when we made the big move from Oakland, California to Dallas, Texas. The set of windows all the way to the left was our toy room and the ones next to that was my brother’s room. Loved that house….even with the annoying neighbor girls Heather and Megan. Their dad was the capt. for SFPD and had an orange VW Beetle. When we would ride in the car with him, he would let us put the spinning red attachable light on the roof. You know….old school coppers!
I remember walking down the stairs to the basement to spend time with my dad and the old neighbor guy that played piano and always had m&m’s. My mom would always make us homemade playdough and let us fingerpaint. A few times we had to get under the kitchen table during supper because of small earthquakes. Our neighbors to the left had grapes growing on the fence between our houses and I would always go pick them. The smell was so distinct. We had railroad ties in the backyard and I always remember digging holes in the dirt with my brother every time I smell creosote. My favorite places in Oakland were the ice cream parlor and Storyland. Matt (brother) and I had an older black lady that would watch us while my parents worked across the bay in San Francisco. We called her Aunt Faye and I remember a little boy eating a snail as a dare while we were playing in her backyard. She would watch her stories everyday and I would sit in the kitchen with her while she made lunch. Wow! Good ol’ days!
